Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. As a child, Ruth Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as a waitress or cleaner to help them remain alive. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. However, she was only in the school for two years, before going on to pursue an acting profession. She faced many obstacles on the path she chose to pursue. In New York she was hired to take photos in a crime magazine however, no theatre jobs were forthcoming. When she was employed as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit and returned to Boston. The city of Boston was in which she was employed during the late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time, was an usherette. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
